BURLINGTON, VT (06/11/2009)(readMedia)--

Matthew Rice of Waltham received a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Communication within the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences during May commencement ceremonies at the University of Vermont.

The university conferred degrees this year on an estimated 2,750 graduates, including 2,240 bachelor's, 313 master's, 82 doctoral, and 105 M.D. degree recipients, in addition to 20 post-baccalaureate certificates. Among degree recipients were students from 45 states and 20 countries.

Chartered in 1791, UVM was the first college or university in the United States that did not give preference to a religious sect in its charter and the first to allow women to join Phi Beta Kappa. A small, comprehensive university, it blends the academic heritage of a private university with service missions in the land grant tradition.
