PAUL SMITHS, NY (07/03/2013)(readMedia)-- Daily, all July – Nature Walks

The VIC is offering a naturalist-led interpretive walk every day at 1 p.m. Participants meet in the VIC building and then head out for an hour-long walk exploring different aspects of nature in the Adirondack Park. Free for Friends of the VIC. $10 for all others.

Daily, all July – Butterfly House

The Butterfly House is open each day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., weather permitting. Visitors can view native butterflies up close and learn about the life stages and migratory patterns of these colorful insects. Butterfly House volunteers will be on hand each day to point out different species of butterflies and to provide information on the insect's life cycle. They can also help identify specific plants that are favored by each species.

Daily, through Sunday, July 7 – New Moon Art Show: Wild and True

The Paul Smith's College VIC is hosting a New Moon Art Show featuring artist Ella Davidson and nature photographer Karla Brieant. Free – underwritten by Friends of the VIC.

Daily, starting Tuesday, July 9 – Life on the Lakes Juried Art Show

The Paul Smith's College VIC will host a Juried Art Show through Aug. 5. An artist reception will be held on July 12 from 5-7 p.m. The theme of the show will be "Life on the Lakes." Free – underwritten by Friends of the VIC.

Monday-Saturday, July 8-13 – Invasive Species Week

The VIC will host representatives from the Adirondack Watershed Institute Watershed Stewardship Program and the Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program. VIC staff and stewards will lead interpretive walks each day to raise awareness about the threat and spread of a variety of invasive species in the Adirondacks. Stewards will be on hand most of the week to answer questions and discuss how people can get involved by recognizing invasive plants and animals and assist in curbing their spread.

Mondays and Wednesdays, July 8, 10, 15, 17, 22, 24, 29 and 31 – Yoga on the Deck

Get out of the studio and into nature. Enhance your practice by experiencing a world of new sensations and become part of a boundless yoga experience. This class is open to all abilities. $15/person or prepay for three classes or more at a rate of $13 each. All 16 classes for $160 ($10 per class). Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, July 4, 6, 9, 11, 13, 16, 18, 20, 23, 25, 27 and 30 – Interpretive Canoe Paddles

Join one of our naturalist on a two-hour paddle and learn about the various wetland areas around the VIC. Walk along Heron Marsh and Barnum Brook; explore marsh stream bog and pond; check out a floating bog mat and see the aquatic flora and fauna abundant in the various habitats. Paddles are offered twice a day at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. $20/adult; $50/family. Friends of the VIC receive a 25 percent discount. Fridays, July 5, 12, 19 and 26 – Farmers' Market

The Paul Smith's College VIC farmers' market features fresh vegetables and berries in season, breads and other baked goods, herbs, jams and jellies, and plants. The market is part of the Adirondack Farmers' Market Cooperative. The market will be open every Friday throughout the summer from 2-5:30 p.m.

Saturdays, July 6, 13, 20 and 27 – Birds of Prey Demonstrations

The Paul Smith's College VIC and Adirondack Raptors invites you to spend Saturday afternoons learning about birds of prey. Mark Manske of Adirondack Raptors will have live birds on hand from 1-3 p.m. Free – underwritten by Friends of the VIC.

Selected Sundays and Wednesdays, July 10, 14, 24 and 28 – Mushroom Walks with Susan Hopkins

Join mushroom expert Susan Hopkins at 10 a.m. as she leads a casual walk through the woods in search of mushrooms and fungi. Participants will discuss and identify the different poisonous, edible and medicinal species. The walks, which last about 2 1/2 hours, will be held rain or shine, so be prepared. $10 for Friends of the VIC; $20 for all others.

Wednesday, July 17 and Wednesday, July 31 – 5K Trail Runs

The Paul Smith's College VIC will host a 5K trail run every other Wednesday until Sept. 25. Runners get a chance to check out the VIC trails and meet other trail enthusiasts. Registration starts at 6 p.m. The runs start at 6:30 p.m. $5/person.

Thursdays and Saturdays, July 6, 18, 20 and 27– Teddy Roosevelt Bird Walk

Join ornithologist Brian McAllister and get a look at some of the same birds identified by a young Teddy Roosevelt when he visited Paul Smiths in the 1870s. Birders will meet at the VIC at 9 a.m. $10/person. Please call the Paul Smith's College VIC by 5 p.m. a day before the walks to register in advance. (518) 327-6241.

Saturday, July 6 – Wildflower Walk

Botanist Daun Reuter will lead a walk along the Boreal Life Trail to examine the wildflowers of the Adirondacks. The walk begins at 10 a.m. and will last about two hours. $10 for Friends of the VIC. $20 for all others.

Friday, July 12 – Life on the Lakes Artist Reception

An artist reception for the Life on the Lakes Juried Art Show will be held in the VIC Great Room from 5-7 p.m. Free – underwritten by Friends of the VIC.

Friday, July 19 – Historic Motion Pictures of Saranac Lake's Past

Award-winning producer and director Jim Griebsch will show Historic Films of Saranac Lake's Past – a compilation of films and images that have rarely been seen by the general public. The program begins at 7 p.m. and includes updated and recently digitized footage from the Kollecker film collection, as well as newly discovered footage. The films are from the Kollecker film collection in the Saranac Lake Free Library's Adirondack Room. The program is free and open to all, but donations, in any amount, will go toward restoring the film collection.

Saturday, July 20 – Adirondack Loon Census

The VIC's Adirondack Birding Center is recruiting volunteers for a census of adult loons, chicks and immature loons. Census volunteers sign up to monitor a lake from 8-9 a.m. on census day. Results will be submitted to the Wildlife Conservation Society. For more information, call Brian McAllister at (518) 327-6241.

Monday, July 22 – Moth Night at the VIC

As part of National Moth Week, a global celebration of moths and biodiversity, the VIC will host a naturalist-led crepuscular/evening walk along Heron Marsh from 8-9 p.m. while daytime animals are moving between daytime feeding grounds and their nighttime/sleeping grounds and nocturnal animals are awakening and beginning to search for food. $10/person. From 9-11 p.m., Prof. Janet Mihuc will lead the public through a field survey of moth collecting sites to observe and identify previously collected moth species. $10/person. $15/person for both events; $25/family. Friends of the VIC receive a 25 percent discount.

Tuesday, July 23 – Moth Week Display

As part of National Moth Week, the VIC will host an indoor moth display of the live moths that were captured the night before. Prof. Janet Mihuc will be available from 9-11 a.m. to answer questions at the moth table. Participants are invited to help release the live moths. Free – underwritten by Friends of the VIC.

Saturday, July 27 – Weekend Run Through the Woods

These 5K and 10K courses, which are part of the 20th anniversary Butterfly House celebration, kick off at 10 a.m. $25/person. Free for Friends of the VIC Trail Blazers; $20 for Friends of the VIC.

Saturday, July 27 – 20th Anniversary Butterfly House Celebration

This summer marks the 20th birthday of the Butterfly House, which first opened in July 1993. The VIC will mark the occasion with special events, including a family-friendly drumming workshop, face-painting, a scavenger hunt and butterfly games. Free – underwritten by Friends of the VIC.
