Daily, starting Friday, Oct. 4 – New Moon Art Show: Brush with the Past
Artist Matt Burnett, photographer Ed Murphy and artist Melissa Burnett are exhibiting their work at the Paul Smith's College VIC from Friday, Oct. 4, through Saturday, Nov. 2. Matt Burnett's art focuses on natural forces and living history. Photographer Ed Murphy's images explore the natural beauty of the northern Adirondacks, focusing on the mountains and vistas of Norman Ridge and the flora and fauna of the Bloomingdale Bog and the VIC. Melissa Burnett is a painter whose medium of choice is water mixable oil paints. An opening reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4. Light refreshments provided. Daily, VIC Map Hike
The Paul Smith's College VIC has developed a new hike to provide individuals, families and groups with another way to enjoy the VIC trails. Purchase a trail map at the VIC and find your way to different checkpoints where you collect secret codes. Participants who find at least five codes are eligible for prizes and a 10 percent discount on a compass at Blue Line Sports in Saranac Lake. There is no time limit on this activity. Admission to the trails is free until the snow flies.

Saturdays, Oct. 5, 12, 19 & 26 – Birds of Prey Demonstrations
The Paul Smith's College VIC and Adirondack Raptors invites you to spend Saturday afternoons with live birds of prey. Wednesday, Oct. 2 – Future Generations Graduate School Presentations
Two students from the Future Generations Graduate School in West Virginia – Sabina Carlson Robbilard, from Haiti, and Shondell France, from Guyana – will give a talk on their community development projects from 10 a.m. to noon.
Wednesday, Oct. 9 – 5K Trail Run

Saturday, Oct. 12 – All About Owls
To celebrate Owl Month, the Paul Smith's College VIC, Adirondack Raptors and the Adirondack Wildlife Refuge are teaming up to provide a daylong program on owls, including a presentation on saw-whet owl banding, a birds of prey demonstration by Mark Manske from Adirondack Raptors and a presentation on raptor migration by Adirondack Birding Center Director Brian McAlister. Manske and Wendy Hall from the Adirondack Wildlife Refuge will also give a presentation with live owls.

Saturday, Oct. 12 – Columbus Day Weekend Fall Foliage Ramble
Come join us at the Paul Smith's College VIC for our trail-run grand finale during the peak of fall foliage. The Fall Foliage Ramble will feature a 5K and 15K race. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m. Awards will follow the 15K race. Cider, doughnuts, apple pie and pumpkin muffins will greet racers at the finish line. Winners will be awarded a hand-crafted trophy and a container of syrup from the Paul Smith's College sugar bush. $25/person. Sunday, Oct. 13 – Adirondack Loon Celebration
The Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation and the Paul Smith's College VIC present a family-friendly celebration of the Common Loon – the iconic symbol of the Adirondack Mountains. The day will feature activities for both adults and kids, including a field trip to a local pond, music by singer/songwriter Jamie Savage, a scavenger hunt, games, crafts and Merriloons the Clown. There will also be an ongoing silent auction of loon-related items. The drawing for the loon quilt raffle will be held during a reception at the end of the day. Free admission. Donations accepted.

The VIC is offering a naturalist-led interpretive walk on selected Saturday afternoons in the fall. Participants meet in the VIC building at 1 p.m. for an hour-long walk exploring different aspects of nature in the Adirondack Park. Tuesday, Oct. 22 – Volunteer Potluck
VIC volunteers meet at 5 p.m. for a potluck supper and a preview of upcoming events and activities. VIC volunteers provide visitor information, perform stewardship projects and participate in citizen science projects. Those interested in volunteering are welcome. The main dish is provided. Bring a place setting and side dish or dessert to share.
Saturday, Oct. 26 – Quilt Workshop: Build a Log Cabin Quilt
Karen LiVecchi will lead a quilting workshop from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Learn how to construct the traditional log-cabin block and use it to create a table runner or wall hanging or add blocks for a larger quilt. $45/person. Pre-registration is required by Thursday, Oct. 24. Call (518) 327-6241.
