PAUL SMITHS, NY (09/03/2014)(readMedia)-- Thursday, Sept. 4, and Sunday, Sept. 6 – Where do all the Butterflies go for the Winter?

Join Sue Grimm Hanley in the Paul Smith's College VIC's Native Species Butterfly House from 1-3 p.m. to see exactly what our native butterflies do to prepare for winter. Weather permitting, we will also tag and release some monarchs. The workshop will move inside in the event of rain. Cameras are welcome. $20/session, $15 for Friends of the VIC, free Friends of the VIC Monarchs. Preregistration required by 5 p.m. the day before.

Wednesday, Sept. 10 – 5K Fun Run

We'll keep you on your toes every other Wednesday through October for just $5. Registration's at 5:30 p.m., and the race starts at 6 p.m. On alternate Wednesdays to the VIC Trail Runs, High Peaks Cyclery offers fun trail runs at Mount Van Hoevenberg. Keep an eye out for future runs Wednesday, Sept. 24, and Wednesday, Oct. 8. Mark your calendar for Saturday, Oct. 11th, when we feature our Columbus Day Fall Foliage Ramble. Join Adirondack Birding Center Director Brian McAllister from 9-11 a.m. as he searches for seasonal birds migrating through the Adirondacks. $20/session, $15 for Friends of the VIC. Free for Warblers. Preregistration required by 5 p.m. the day before.

Saturday, Sept. 13 – Interpretive Nature Walk

Join one of our interpretive naturalists and explore the flora, fauna and ecology of the Adirondack Park from 1-2 p.m. Free for Friends of the VIC, $10 for nonmembers.

Saturday, Sept. 13 – Fall VIC Explorer Series: Habitats

Join Deb Paradis from 1-4 p.m. as she kicks off our six-session series on exploring the outdoors in fall. The series is geared toward third- to fifth-graders and will involve an outdoor walk, games, activities and crafts. We're throwing a VIC Explorer Party Saturday, Nov. 15, for those who complete four of the six sessions. Space is limited to 10 children per group, so sign up now. $25/session, $20 for Friends of the VIC. Preregistration required by 5 p.m. the day before. Each student will need to have a completed registration form signed by a parent or guardian prior to the event, so please come a little early. Other dates: Saturday, Sept. 20; Saturday, Oct. 4; Saturday, Oct. 18; Saturday, Oct. 25; and Saturday, Nov. 8.

Sunday, Sept. 14 – Friends of the VIC Walk

Thursday, Sept. 25 – Volunteer Potluck

VIC volunteers are welcome to this potluck. Bring a dish to pass. We will meet for hors d'oeuvres at 5:30 p.m. Dinner is at 6 p.m. Get the scoop on coming events, engage in volunteer opportunities and participate in volunteer training sessions.

Friday, Sept. 26 – Autumn Owl Walk

Join naturalist Brian McAllister at 7:30 p.m. as he searches the trails for owls. Please bring a flashlight or headlamp to help guide your way. We'll meet in the VIC parking lot. $10/person or $5 for Friends of the VIC. Preregistration required by 5 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 27 – Homesteading Festival

This celebration of rural skills takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The festival will showcase historical traditions, as well as modern tools and techniques for safe and practical rural living with a distinctly Adirondack flair. Learn to log and farm with draft horses and check out a demonstration of competitive lumberjack sports by the Paul Smith's College Woodsmen's Team. Workshops and demonstrations will appeal to a wide range of interests. Topics include canning, dehydrating jerky, cider making, bow building, renewable energy, raising livestock, poultry processing, foraging for wild edibles, small-scale farming, heating with firewood and primitive skills.

Sunday, Sept. 28 – Volunteer Training: Seasonal Changes at the VIC

Why do the leaves change colors, and how does it happen? Where do the butterflies, moths and animals go? Take a walk with Brian McAllister from 9 a.m.-noon and learn all about these seasonal changes and more!

Wednesday-Thursday, Oct. 8 & 9 – Hunter Safety Education Course

The first course will be held from 5-9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at the Paul Smith's College VIC. The second will be held from 5-10 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, at the Saranac Lake Fish & Game Club. Instructors: R. Hartmann (lead), M. Rothamel and R. Scollin.

New Moon Art Show: Pastels, Photographs and Wood Art by Joyce Hanson and Ron Pederson

This show features a variety of intimate images and photographs, including scenes from local waterways and forests, as well as wood pieces crafted from local trees. All are available for viewing and purchase.
