Update: Changes Made to SUNY Plattsburgh 'Walk on By' Calendar of Events
PLATTSBURGH, NY (03/02/2009)(readMedia)-- Some changes have been made to SUNY Plattsburgh's 'Walk on By' calendar of events. The week has been organized as a positive response to the messages of the Westboro Baptist Church, which will be picketing the college's production of "The Laramie Project."
Two additional events have been added to the line up for Thursday, March 5. One is a presentation and the other is a performance titled "Cartographies of Struggle: Palestinian Women's Resistance Under Occupation/As Refugees." Both feature Dr. Laila Farah from DePaul University and focus on struggles to end sexism, racism and homophobia as well as on Palestinian women's resistance under occupation and as refugees. The presentation will take place from 12:30 until 1:15 p.m. in Krinovitz Recital Hall, Hawkins Hall. The performance will take place from 7 to 9 p.m., also in Krinovitz Recital Hall.
In addition, the religious panel discussion, titled "Finding Common Ground: Homosexuality and Religion," will be held at 9 p.m., and not 9 a.m. on Tuesday, March 3, in the Alumni Conference Room, Angell College Center. This panel will feature Rabbi Andrew Goodman Temple Beth Israel; Rev. Tim Atwater from the Campus Protestant Ministry; Student Association Vice President Aymen Belazi, a Muslim; and SOUL representative Sean Watson. The panel will review references to homosexuality in major religious texts: the Koran, the Bible, and the Torah. The event is sponsored by SOUL, Muslim Student Association, Hillel, Intervarsity Christian Fellowship and the Student Association.
On Wednesday, March 4, the Greek Ally Project has been moved from noon to 7:30 p.m. in the Cardinal Lounge, Angell College Center. The project is an interactive program through the Center for Fraternity and Sorority Life. Its goal is to create a community that accepts, supports and understands gay lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questions brothers and sisters. Part four of six, this module is titled "Religion and Homophobia" and is designed to analyze how religious and spiritual beliefs influence attitudes in fraternities and sororities toward being gay, lesbian, or bisexual.
Finally, the debate on same-sex marriage scheduled for Wednesday, March 4, will now be held in Room 202 of Yokum Hall.
