PLATTSBURGH, NY (08/31/2009)(readMedia)-- The State University of New York College at Plattsburgh presents a calendar of public events through the beginning of October. It contains a sampling of arts, workshops, talks and other events at the college, all of which are open to the public and many of which are free of charge.

(Added event) Plattsburgh: The Sociable City? Third floor auditorium, Plattsburgh City Hall. A series of forums, running throughout the day, that will strive to answer the question, "Is Plattsburgh vibrant, safe and sociable?" Round-table vibrancy, 10-11:30 a.m. Round table on safety 1:30-3 p.m. Presentation reviewing the recommendations from the round tables, exploring various national trends and identifying what steps can be taken to make Plattsburgh a more sociable and hospitable city, 4 p.m. Jim Peters, president and founder of the Responsible Hospitality Institute in Santa Cruz, Calif., a group that has worked with cities across the United States and Canada, will lead the forums.

"Platanos and Collard Greens." 5 p.m. Hartman Theatre, Myers Fine Arts Building. Off-Broadway actors from New York City come to Plattsburgh to perform in the hit play about Freeman, an African-American man, and Angelita, a Latino woman, who are both forced to confront and overcome cultural and racial prejudices while defending their bond from family and friends. Sponsored by El Pueblo. $5.

"Belle of Amherst." 7:30 p.m. Hartman Theatre, Myers Fine Arts Building. William Luce's one-woman play based on the life and work of 19th-century American poet, Emily Dickinson, who, through her poems, diaries and letters, shares stories about the people and events that shaped her secluded life. Directed by theater alumnus Tyler Nye, with Kathleen Recchia as Emily Dickinson. $5 general admission. $2 SUNY Plattsburgh students. Sandy, professor of counselor education and school psychology at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire, will give the keynote address.
