WE TOLD YOU IN FEBRUARY (AND A BUNCH OF TIMES BEFORE THAT): COMMON CAUSE/NY REPORT ON BOE REFORM

CC/NY Pushed for BOE Reform Before It Was Cool

NEW YORK, NY (07/02/2021) (readMedia)-- Did something happen in New York with the Board of Elections this week?

Common Cause/NY has been sounding the alarm about the administration of New York elections for years, even before it was cool enough for ex-Presidents to mislead the public about. The problems with the city and state Boards of Elections are not new, and while there is consensus that these problems exist, reform has been stalled at every turn.

In February 2021, CC/NY issued a report outlining recommendations for reform. While some counties perform better than others, there is a desperate need for reform at the state level. The report addresses two distinct and wide-reaching issues:

  • A structure that is firmly under the control of political parties, rife with political patronage, with no accountability to voters and taxpayers
  • A lack of funding for election administration

What if New Yorkers had the election administration they deserve? Voters would appreciate it. Now go ask some state lawmakers about it!
