PADUCAH, KY (04/16/2018) West Kentucky Community and Technical College's Paducah School of Art and Design (PSAD) will open two exhibitions April 19 at the 2D and Graphic Design Building, 905 Harrison Street. Both exhibitions are free and open to the public. An opening reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. in the Bill Ford Gallery.

PSAD, in collaboration with American Quilter's Society (AQS), will host SAQA: Korean Quilts Now, an exhibition of art quilts from makers in the Studio Art Quilt Association of the Republic of Korea. The exhibition, to be held in the Bill Ford Gallery, is PSAD's third sanctioned collaboration with the American Quilter's Society (AQS) during its internationally renowned Fall and Spring QuiltWeeks in Paducah. During this year's Spring QuiltWeek (April 18-21), PSAD will be included as a stop on the bus tour of AQS activities. Attendees should access the building through the public entry on Harrison Street.

The Studio Arts Quilt Associates™ of the Republic of Korea began in 2010. This exhibit features a variety of art quilt techniques the group has been studying over the last several years. The group collaborated to create three of the works. Through their artwork, these quilters incorporate unusual and interesting interpretations of life that surrounds them - sometimes joy and sometimes turmoil.

"PSAD is delighted to be once again participating as an exhibition venue for this year's Spring QuiltWeek in Paducah," said art school director Paul Aho. "With Korean Quilts Now, we continue a tradition of international exhibitions that have included Australian and European fine art quilters in past shows. We are also pleased to be a part of the many events and attractions that make Paducah's QuiltWeek the American Quilter's Society's biggest event of the year. The exhibition also complements the development of our new fiber arts studio and community education programs at PSAD."

Korean Quilts Now is complemented by Permutations, an exhibition of works by students currently enrolled in PSAD's Survival Skills for Artists class. The exhibition will be on the second floor of the 2D and Graphic Design Building in the PJC Gallery.

The Survival Skills for Artists class is taught by PSAD's Professor of Drawing Randy Simmons. Participating students are Alison Boyt, Mark Emmons, Ian Gresham, Demi Oakley and Meagan Truitt. Now in its sixth year, the exhibition includes sculpture, ceramics, photography, and drawing.

The Survival Skills class is designed to prepare students for their next step into the art world, teach them to prepare their portfolios to best represent themselves, and how to professionally display their work in a public venue. The class also teaches skills in photographing artwork, safe studio practices and marketing strategies.

Both exhibits run through April 21. Gallery hours during QuiltWeek are Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

West Kentucky Community and Technical College's PSAD offers an Associate in Fine Arts degree in Visual Art and an Associate in Applied Science degree and certificate programs in Visual Communication: Multimedia, as well as studio art classes for students of all levels and disciplines. Classes are offered on WKCTC's campus; 905 Harrison Street; and 919 Madison Street.
