WPI team wins the 2025 ASM Strong Bar Competition
Organized by the ASM International, the Strong Bar Competition requires the contestants to design a heat treatment for a given steel grade to achieve the highest possible bend strength. This year's steel was SAE-9254 spring steel.
A Worcester Polytechnic Institute student team designed a novel heat treatment involving fast quenching and a sub-zero treatment. They presented their results during the IMAT/Heat Treat 2025 conference, held in October this year at Detroit, Michigan. By designing this microstructure, they outperformed about 50 teams from all across the nation.
