WWII and The Great Depression to be focus of Flagler Community Lecture

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL (02/27/2012)(readMedia)-- On Tuesday, March 13 at 10 a.m., the Flagler College Community Lecture Series will offer a presentation by Dr. Roger Bradley, Assistant Professor of Economics, entitled "Did World War II End the Great Depression?"

Bradley's presentation will take a closer look at the commonly-held belief that, during World War II, increased military production for the war effort effectively ended the Great Depression.

"Some economic historians have begun to question this perception," he said. "We recognize now that government data from that period may be less reliable than originally thought because of the controlled economy. Also, recent scholarship suggests that by the time of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the American economy was already free of many of the problems commonly attributed to the Great Depression." The Community Lecture, noted Bradley, will examine these issues more closely and present findings from recent scholarship and analysis.

Bradley earned his Ph.D. in Economics from Clemson University. He received an M.Ed. in Teaching History and a B.S. in Social Studies Education from Bob Jones University. His areas of focus for his doctoral studies included econometrics, industrial organization and monetary economics.

The Flagler College Community Lecture Series, a popular program at the College, focuses this year on speakers who will discuss a special topic on war as viewed through the lens of his or her particular discipline. Topics are provided by local experts and Flagler faculty. Tickets are $5 per person for a single lecture, or $15 for the semester. Active military personnel may attend at no charge. Lectures begin at 10 a.m. in the Flagler Room at Flagler College, 74 King St. Reservations are required as space is limited. The lecture will last approximately one hour and will be followed by a coffee and pastry reception.
