Waterford Resident Paul Lunny Promoted to Sergeant Major in NY Army National Guard

LATHAM, NY (10/14/2016)(readMedia)--  Paul T. Lunny, a Waterford resident, was promoted to the rank of sergeant major in the New York Army National Guard, during a ceremony held at the New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs here on Oct. 14.

A Gulf War veteran, Lunny is the senior Army Inspector General for the New York National Guard.

Lunny enlisted in the active-duty Army in May, 1988. He served in Germany, and with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He later deployed to Operation Desert Storm with the 82nd Airborne Division.

After fulfilling his second active-duty tour, Lunny left the Army in 1996 and started a new career in law enforcement as a New Haven, Connecticut police officer. However, the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 inspired Lunny to re-enlist in the Army.

Lunny served as an instructor at the U.S. Army Mountain Warfare School's Infantry training company, which is located in Jericho, Vermont. He taught the infantry qualification course, Warrior Leader course, Basic Leader course, and Advanced Leader course for infantry Soldiers.

In 2004, Lunny accepted a full-time position with the New York Army National Guard's 2nd Civil Support Team (CST). He worked with the 2nd CST for eight and half years, and served in several different duty positions, to include four years as the team's first sergeant.

Lunny has worked in the Inspector General's Office for the last three and a half years. He's a 2015 graduate of the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy.

In addition to the Meritorious Service Medal, Lunny has been awarded the Army Commendation Medal six times, the Army Achievement Medal six times, the Southwest Asia Service Medal with three bronze stars, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

He lives in Waterford with his wife Alicia and daughter Jennifer.
