LATHAM, NY (04/13/2015)(readMedia)-- Watertown resident Wing Yu,a veteran of the War in Afghanistan, has been promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in the New York Army National Guard.

Yu, who joined the Army National Guard in 1987, is an Active Guard and Reserve officer currently assigned as the deputy J5/7 plans officer for the New York National Guard's Joint Force Headquarters in Latham.

He is responsible for strategic planning, joint operations training and evaluation and the New York National Guard's partnership program with the South African National Defense Forces.

Yu was commissioned through the Reserve Officers Training Corps in 1994 from the New York Institute of Technology. He served on active duty as a combat engineer from 1994 to 1999 with assignments to the 1st Infantry Division, the 2nd Infantry Division and the 10th Mountain Division.

He rejoined the New York Army National Guard in 1999, serving as the facilities maintenance officer for Camp Smith Training Site near Peekskill. He served there through 2008, also serving as Headquarters Company Commander and Environmental Officer.

He deployed to Afghanistan in 2008 and served as project/electrical engineer for Combined Joint Task Force Phoenix VII as a member of the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.

After returning from Afghanistan Yu was assigned to the 42nd Infantry Division in Troy, N.Y. as a plans officer. He was then assigned to the 642nd Aviation Support Battalion in Rochester as the executive officer.

He deployed to Kuwait with the battalion in 2013.

Yu's awards include the Meritorious Service Medal; the Army Commendation Medal; the Airborne Badge, the Afghan Campaign Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

He holds a Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineer and a Masters Degree in Environmental Technology.

Yu with his wife Michelle have a daughter Denise.
