Waukee Cook Wins Great American Spam Championship at the State Fair

DES MOINES, IA (08/17/2018) (readMedia)-- Cooks of all ages put their best pork creations to the test in the Great American Spam Championship competition Sunday at the 2018 Iowa State Fair.

Susie Jones of Waukee won first place and a $150 cash award. Jennifer Bartles of Des Moines claimed second place and $50. Jeffrey King of Newton earned third place and $25.

In the Kid Chef class of competition Leeah Hartman of Des Moines first place and $150. Megan McGuire of Johnston earned second place and $50. Luke Hartman of Des Moines claimed third place and $25.

Entries were judged on taste, creativity, easiness and appearance.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 171 divisions, 727 classes and over 9,574 entries at this year's Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.
