Wheaton College (Ill.) Kelly Thornton named CCIW Softball Hitter of the Week

Wheaton senior Kelly Thornton has been named the CCIW Softball Hitter of the Week, as announced by the conference office.

Thornton posted a .476 (10-for-21) batting average last week with seven runs, three doubles, one home run and seven RBI as the Thunder went 4-2 against CCIW competition last week. She combined to go 4-for-5 with two runs, two doubles and four RBI in a doubleheader sweep at North Park last Tuesday. She was 5-for-9 with three runs and one RBI in a doubleheader split against Carthage on Friday. Thornton hit her team-leading third home run of the season in a 6-3 win at Augustana on Saturday.

Thornton has a .404 (42-for-104) batting average in 30 games this season. She leads the Thunder with 42 hits, a team-high 31 RBI, 12 doubles, is tied for the team lead with three home runs and also tied for the lead with 26 runs scored. She leads the CCIW in hits (42), RBI (31) and doubles (12) this season.

Wheaton College sponsors 21 varsity sports, and Thunder teams compete at the NCAA Division III level. The Thunder Athletics program has won five NCAA Division III Championships since 1984, and Wheaton student-athletes have won 31 Division III individual National Championships all-time.
