'Where Can We Work' Events Reveal Local and Regional Career Opportunities and Advice to GCC Students

BATAVIA, NY (02/10/2017) (readMedia)-- With support from a grant allocated to Genesee Community College's Career Services Center, job-minded and career-oriented students at GCC have had opportunities to mingle with representatives from local and regional organizations and businesses throughout the past six months. They learn about employment openings, receive career advice as well as tips and tricks from working professionals. Put together by the GCC Career Center and known at the Batavia campus as, "Where Can We Work Wednesday," the events this spring semester have evolved into a formal business panel rather than the stop-by the table sessions from last fall.

"We've seen great results," Jamie Schultz, Career Services Center liaison at GCC said. "Students that attended the events have landed internships, jobs, and made strong connections with business leaders and organizations that they are interested in."

Through its different "Where Can We Work" events, the College's Career Services Center has provided students and community members with career resources and employment opportunities, enhancing the relationship between job seekers and area businesses and organizations. Attendees to date include Marshalls Department Store, Entercom Communications, Lifetime Assistance, Chapin International, LeRoy/Sports Plus Physical Therapy, Americorp and more.

The next "Where Can We Work" event is scheduled Wednesday, February 15, 2017 from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. in the GCC Forum at the Batavia campus. Participants include representatives from Ingersoll Rand, Patriot Towers, Finger Lakes Hired and Genesee County Economic Development Center (GCEDC). Christopher Suozzi, vice president of Business Development for GCEDC, will speak about employment opportunities and the economic development and growth in Genesee County.

Suozzi has worked for GCEDC since 2007 and his main role with the organization is business development and sales. A graduate of GCC, he is heavily involved with workforce development programs and assists in coordination/communication with local companies and institutions such as Cornell University, Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Rochester, University at Buffalo, Syracuse University, Monroe Community College, Erie Community College and GCC.

Students interested in attending the February 15 event must pre-register using the Purple Briefcase utility available on GCC's Career Center webpage. http://www.genesee.edu/offices/career/

In addition to hearing business leaders speak about job opportunities, business trends and professional career advice, attendees will be welcome to speak with the panelists for individual discussion after the presentation.

Interested students from the GCC Albion and Medina Campus Centers should be on the lookout for "Where Can We Work" events, dates and businesses networking opportunities that are currently being organized for upcoming occasions.
