Safe Driving Tips

ALBANY, NY (01/07/2011)(readMedia)-- Due to a winter storm that began today, Friday, January 7, the New York State Thruway Authority advises motorists to avoid any unnecessary travel, especially in the Hudson Valley, where it's snowing heavily.

The Thruway Authority offers these winter driving tips:

• Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle, including blankets, gloves, hats, food, water and any needed medication.

• Keep at least half a tank of gasoline in your vehicle at all times.

• If you find yourself behind a snowplow, stay behind it until it's safe to pass.

• Always buckle your seat belt and require your passengers do the same.

At times of inclement weather, motorists will be advised through electronic Variable Message Signs along the roadway, TRANSalerts, and the Thruway Highway Advisory Radio. Should an emergency occur, motorists are advised to call either 1-800-842-2233 or 911.
