Woodward Baker Avoids Thorny Situation in State Fair Win

DES MOINES, IA (08/16/2018) (readMedia)-- Allison Baumhover of Woodward won first place and a $35 cash award in the Everything's Coming Up Rose Water competition judged Monday at the 2018 Iowa State Fair.

Robin Tarbell-Thomas of Centerville claimed second place and $25. Velma Reese of Madrid earned third place and $15.

Judges also awarded Honorable mention to Rex Schulze of Urbandale.

Contestants were challenged to create a baked entry typical of colonial times, using rose water as an ingredient.

Entries were judged on flavor, appearance and story.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 171 divisions, 727 classes and over 9,574 entries at this year's Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.
