Young Cooks Win Sack Lunch Contest

DES MOINES, IA (09/14/2018) (readMedia)-- Lydia Hunter from Waukee won first place, $15, and a lunch box in the My Healthy School Sack Lunch competition, judged Saturday at the 2018 Iowa State Fair. Lydia placed 3rd in the 2017 contest.

Kennedy Cain from Des Moines claimed second place and $10 while Micah Hunter from Waukee earned third place and $5.

The contestants age twelve and under are challenged to prepare a lunch you would take to school in a decorated lunch bag or sack.

Entries were judged on a well-rounded nutritional lunch, taste, ease of preparation and decoration of the bag or sack.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 171 divisions, 727 classes and over 9,574 entries at this year's Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.
