Zeitler Dominates State Fair Veggie Canning Contest

DES MOINES, IA (08/11/2018) (readMedia)-- Rod Zeitler of Iowa City won First and Second Places Overall in the Canned Vegetables competition, judged August 7 prior to the start of the 2018 Iowa State Fair.

Zeitler also won the Sweepstakes award. Jacqueline Riekena of West Des Moines and Susan Schultz of Haverhill tied for Reserve Sweepstakes honors.

Entries were judged on appearance, selection of products and food safety.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 171 divisions, 727 classes and over 9,856 entries at this year's Fair. Due to the large number of classes, Food Department judging begins prior to the Fair in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.
