LATHAM, NY (01/11/2013)(readMedia)-- New York Army National Guard Captain Dermot Gavin, an East Durham resident who teaches history and government at Schenectady High school, manages Gavins Irish Country Inn and works as a Ski Patroller at Windham Mountain, will take command of Company C 2nd Battalion 108th Infantry on Sunday, Jan. 13.

The company is based at the New York State Armory in Gloversville.

Gavin, who lives in East Durham with his wife Tara and his two children, is a veteran of the War in Afghanistan.

He deployed there in 2009 with the 1st Battalion 121st Infantry of the Georgia Army National Guard as a platoon leader and again in 2012 as the logistics officer for the 2nd Battalion 108th Infantry.

Gavin joined the New York Army National Guard in 2006 and earned his commission as an officer through the Officers Candidate School program in 2007. He also deployed to Thailand with the 2-108th Infantry in January and February 2009 as part of the Operation Cobra Gold training exercise.

He is a U.S. History and Government teacher at Steinmentz Career and Leadership Academy, Schenectady High School, Schenectady City School District. He has been a full time teacher since 2006. In addition, he works as a manager at Gavin's Irish Country Inn and as a Ski Patroller at Windham Mountain

Gavin holds a BA in History from the Virginia Military Institute, which he graduated from in 2003m and has a Masters in Social Studies from Russell Sage Graduate School.

He is a graduate of the Army's Infantry Officer Basic Course, AIRBORNE School, and Support Operations Schools.

Gavin's awards and decorations include the Combat Infantryman Badge, Two Bronze Star Medals, the Army Commendation Medal with Valor Device, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Two Campaign Stars, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Overseas Training Ribbon, and the NATO Medal.
