BATAVIA, NY (09/14/2015)(readMedia)-- The Clarendon Historical Society and the Genesee Community College History Club will be presenting "Hillside Heritage Events" in October and November to benefit the restoration of the Hillside Cemetery chapel. Designed by Rochester architect Addison Forbes, the Medina sandstone chapel was built in the Gothic Revival style in 1894.

Hillside Heritage events will include a series of evening lectures, sans technology, lit only with oil lamps inside the chapel itself at Hillside Cemetery outside the village of Holley. Lectures begin at 7 p.m. and are FREE, though donations to the restoration fund are gladly accepted.

• A full day of programs are planned intended to spotlight the chapel and cemetery, culminating in an evening "ghost walk." There will be open tours and a basket raffle from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. as well as living history demonstrations. Bill Lattin will speak in the chapel about Victorian Mourning Art from 4 p.m. – 5 p.m. and "ghost walk" will end the night from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. GCC students will serve as guides and ghosts during the walk. The walk will include a tour of the old cemetery, with stops at eight stations associated with the graves of significant local people. The "ghosts" will portray the folks buried in the cemetery and will relate their life stories. Admission to the "Ghost Walk" will be $10 per person to benefit the chapel restoration fund. All tours will start at the chapel in Hillside Cemetery. The events are part of the 2nd Annual Tri-County Museum Crawl. • GCC Associate Dean of the Orleans County Campus Centers and Historian Jim Simon will present "The Philosophy of History: What does it Matter?" From the recent Supreme Court case legalizing gay marriage to the removal of the confederate flag from the South Carolina state capitol, Simon will discuss how history informs students, teachers, citizens and policy makers in the 21st century.
