Author David Huddle to Give Poetry Reading at SUNY Plattsburgh May 2

PLATTSBURGH, NY (04/24/2008; 1208)(readMedia)-- Author David Huddle will read from his most recent book of poems on Friday, May 2, at 7 p.m. in the Commons Room of Champlain Valley Hall on the SUNY Plattsburgh Campus. The event is free and open to the public.

Huddle, who has written 15 books of poetry, fiction and essays, will read from his most recent work, “Glory River.”

"In ‘Glory River,’ David Huddle's poems pit precise observation, extravagant language and humor against despair in an attempt to find a way to live in a new century in which the values of the past are dissolving and those of the future are frightening,” said a review in the Louisiana State University Press. “ ... Accessible and often humorous, the poems in ‘Glory River’ range from the strange and extraordinary happenings in the fantastical Virginia town to the painful, hopeful and no less magical situations that can occur in real lives."

Huddle’s poems, essays and short stories have appeared in Esquire, Harper's Magazine, The New York Times Magazine, Story, “The Autumn House Anthology of Poetry,” and “The Best American Short Stories.” His work has also been included in anthologies about the Vietnam War.

Originally from Ivanhoe, Virginia, David Huddle interrupted his undergraduate work at the University of Virginia to serve in the U.S. Army in Germany and Vietnam. He eventually earned his degree at the University of Virginia, and then went on to take graduate degrees from Hollins College and Columbia University. He began teaching at the University of Vermont in 1971.
