Bishop’s Got a Fever and the Only Prescription is More Independence

SHIRLEY, NY (02/22/2008; 1044)(readMedia)-- The Republican candidate for New York’s First Congressional District today criticized his opponent, Congressman Tim Bishop, for voting with his party nearly 100% of the time.

“Our tracking shows that my opponent votes with his party 98.8% of the time,” said Lee Zeldin, the GOP candidate for the district encompassing Eastern Long Island. “I guess you could say that he’s got a ‘fever’ for Nancy Pelosi (see attached graphic), the leader of a Congress with one of the lowest approval ratings in American history.”

“No Congressional leader from another district somewhere else in the country will ever represent the issues affecting us on Eastern Long Island one hundred percent of the time,” said Zeldin in his January campaign kickoff announcement. “This is important because now more than ever, the hardworking men and women of New York’s First Congressional District need an advocate. We need a champion, a bulldog that is going to fight for us and not a lapdog for Nancy Pelosi’s misguided agenda.

“We live in an independent district. Republicans will vote for Democrats, and Democrats will vote for Republicans. We vote for the best candidate. As a Congressman, my loyalty will be to the residents of the First Congressional District of New York, not the leaders of any political party, especially when they are shortchanging my constituents. We send too much more money to Washington then we receive in return. It is time for a change in leadership.”

Zeldin served as an aide to State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle. The Shirley resident studied at the University at Albany, graduated from Albany Law School, and earned his commission through Army ROTC. He was as a paratrooper, prosecutor and magistrate with the 82nd Airborne Division and XVIII Airborne Corps. In the summer of 2006, he was a JAG attorney deployed to Iraq. He is currently an attorney at Raiser & Kenniff on Long Island._
