Bricklayers And Allied Craftworkers Recruit Apprentices

BUFFALO, NY (10/30/2007; 1544)(readMedia)-- The Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee, Local 3 (Buffalo Chapter), will conduct apprentice recruitment from November 6, 2007 through November 4, 2008, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today. Two applicants will be accepted for the following trades: bricklayer, mason; pointer, caulker, cleaner and tile setter.

Applications will be available at the BAC local, 2350 North Forest Rd., Suite 17A, Getzville, from 9 a.m. to noon, the first Tuesday of each month, except holidays, during the recruitment period. Applicants must apply in person.

The committee requires that applicants:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a high school or general equivalency diploma – documentation required after acceptance for the program.
  • Take an aptitude test.
  • Live within the local’s geographic jurisdiction –Niagara, Erie, Genesee, Orleans, Wyoming, Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua County.
  • Have reliable transportation to various work sites and apprentice classes.
  • Sign an affidavit attesting to their physical ability to do the work, which may require working from scaffolds.
  • Pay a $5 processing fee.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
