Bricklayers Recruit Apprentices

LONG ISLAND CITY, NY (03/31/2008; 1542)(readMedia)-- The Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee, Local 1, will conduct recruitment from March 28 through June 27, 2008 for 20 bricklayer-mason apprentices and 10 pointer-caulker-cleaner apprentices, 10 plasterer and 5 stone mason apprentices State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today.

Applications will be available at the International Masonry Institute, 12-07 44th Ave., Long Island City, on the last Friday of each month during the recruitment period. Applicants must be present by 8 a.m.; no one will be admitted after 8:30 a.m.

The committee requires that applicants:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Possess sufficient reading and math comprehension skills to satisfactorily complete on-the-job training and related technical instruction. A high school or general equivalency diploma is recommended.
  • Applicants accepted for the program must complete a 12 week pre-job training course.
  • Be physically able to do the work.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
