Carpenters Recruit Apprentices

OLEAN, NY (09/17/2007; 1018)(readMedia)-- The Empire State Carpenters Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee, Local 66, will conduct recruitment from September 19, 2007 through September 18, 2008 for three carpenter apprentices, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today.

Applications will be available in person only at the local, 112 South Third St., Olean, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., the third Wednesday of each month during the recruitment period.

The committee requires that applicants:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a high school or general equivalency diploma.
  • Live within the local's geographic jurisdiction – Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua Counties.
  • Be willing to attend apprentice school for one week in Rochester.
  • Be physically able to do the work as determined by a physician.
  • Take a drug test at the sponsor’s expense at the time of indenture.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
