Cement Masons Recruit Apprentices

NORTH TONAWANDA, NY (04/02/2008; 1456)(readMedia)-- The Cement Masons Joint Apprenticeship Committee, Local 111, will conduct recruitment from April 3 through October 2, 2008 for 10 apprentices, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today.

Applications will be available at the local, 165 Division St., North Tonawanda, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., the first Thursday of each month during the recruitment period or by calling 716-695-1494. Applications will be limited to the first 10 candidates each month.

The committee requires that applicants:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a high school or general equivalency diploma.
  • Live within the local’s geographic jurisdiction – Erie and Niagara Counties.
  • Have a valid driver’s license – apprentices may be required to drive company vehicles.
  • Have reliable transportation to job sites and related instructions.
  • Sign an affidavit stating they are physically able to do the work.
  • Take a substance abuse test.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
