Cement and Concrete Workers Recruit Apprentices

LONG ISLAND CITY, NY (10/26/2007; 1217)(readMedia)-- The Cement and Concrete Workers Training and Education Fund, District Council 16, will conduct recruitment on October 29, 2007 through March 24, 2008 for 30 skilled construction craft laborer apprentices, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today.

Applications can be obtained at the council, 29-18 35th Ave., Long Island City, from 8 a.m. to noon, on the following Mondays: October 29, November 26, December 17, January 28, February 25, and March 24.

The council requires that applicants:

• Be at least 18 years old.
• Have at least a tenth grade education.
• Be able to read and understand course materials.
• Be physically able to do the work.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
