Local Meteorologist Gib Brown to Present Awards to Students
PLATTSBURGH, NY (04/22/2008; 1209)(readMedia)-- The first annual Champlain Valley Regional Science Fair will be held in the Cardinal Lounge of the Angell College Center on the SUNY Plattsburgh campus, Saturday, April 26.
Projects from Clinton, Franklin and Essex counties will be presented by high school and middle school students and teachers. Exhibits will be on display for the public from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., followed immediately by an awards ceremony.
Gib Brown, local meteorologist and former high school science teacher, will present the awards. The science fair is jointly sponsored by SUNY Plattsburgh and Clinton Community College with additional financial support provided by the Miner Agricultural Research Institute.
Staff at both colleges decided to set up the event because they know first-hand the benefits science fairs have for both middle and high school students.
"It stimulates their innate curiosity about the natural world; connects them with an adult mentor; teaches them about the process of scientific investigation and discovery; and prepares students for college-level study and undergraduate research," said Robert Fuller, professor and director of the earth and environmental sciences program at SUNY Plattsburgh. "As our society becomes increasingly dependent on scientific advances and technology, local science fairs contribute by guiding students into science and technology careers."
