CORTLAND, NY (04/17/2008; 1429)(readMedia)-- A gala closing reception for the “Earthly Matters” exhibition presented by a group of SUNY Cortland art and art history students will take place in on Tuesday, April 22, at the Beard Building Gallery of Main Street SUNY Cortland at 9 Main St.
The event on Earth Day runs from 4-8 p.m. The exhibition, which is on display through April 24, and the reception are free and open to the public. The gallery space is open weekdays between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
A major video installation project dedicated to the Millennial Generation’s relationship to the environment also will be premiered at the closing reception. This installation is funded by a SUNY Cortland Millennials Initiative Award and will be on view through May. The event is one of the many campus programs being presented on Earth Day.
“This exhibition is the first of many at the Beard Building Gallery to be organized by students in the Art and Art History Department,” said Kathryn Kramer, associate professor of art and art history.
The students created and installed the exhibition on March 18. The works in all media combine both student and recent faculty artwork that brings environmental issues to light in a wide range of media. They developed the exhibition to coincide with the yearlong lecture series on environmental issues, Earthly Matters, which is organized by the College’s Committee on the Intellectual and Cultural Climate.
Cortland’s art program is expanding and the faculty, students and staff are looking for new ways to involve people outside of the College. Individuals interested in learning how galleries work and in the process of grouping and arranging works are encouraged to contact the department or attend a future event. For more information, contact Kramer at (607) 423-4475 or kramerk@cortland.edu.
The Beard Building Gallery is a collaborative initiative between the Cortland Downtown Partnership, the Cultural Council of Cortland County and SUNY Cortland.
