ALBANY, NY (04/24/2008; 1217)(readMedia)-- The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today announced that a new family electronic newsletter is now available to all New Yorkers named “DEC Outdoor Discovery,” that will focus on kid-friendly events and seasonally-oriented topics.
“This new family e-newsletter focusing on the environment enables anyone to connect to nature. Sharing outdoor experiences with friends and family is an inspirational tool to help communities protect green and open spaces,” said DEC Commissioner Pete Grannis.
The free newsletter encourages New Yorkers to connect with nature by exploring the outdoors and learning about the environment. Every other week, a new issue will introduce subscribers to a seasonally-oriented environmental or nature topic, suggest related activities, and list family-friendly events at DEC’s environmental education centers.
DEC’s four education centers are: Five Rivers (Albany Co.), Rogers (Chenango Co.), Stony Kill (Dutchess Co.) and Dr. Victor Reinstein Woods (Erie Co.). The first issue highlights backyard birds and gives tips on feeding birds, keeping a birding journal and creating a bird bath.
Upcoming issues of DEC Outdoor Discovery will feature topics such as salamanders, frogs, and young wildlife and will be emailed to subscribers every other Wednesday afternoon as well as being posted on DEC’s website. To view the newsletter or to subscribe to receive the newsletter free of charge, visit the DEC website at www.dec.ny.gov/public/43355.html .
