ALBANY, NY (09/11/2007; 1517)(readMedia)-- The Saranac Lake Islands Campground will remain open this year through Columbus Day Weekend, Oct. 8, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation reminds campers.
While it is open, all fees will remain in effect at the campground, which includes campsites on the islands and shores of Lower and Middle Saranac Lake. Reservations may continue to be made through ReserveAmerica at 1-800-456-2267.
In the past the campground closed on Labor Day and campers could camp for free at campsites on the lakes from then until the middle of May. Due to the increase usage and the costs for staffing and managing the campground, DEC has determined to keep the campground open for the additional period of time.
Campers can continue to camp for free on designated sites on Upper Saranac Lake or other non-campground sites. However, in regards to these sites, groups of ten (10) or more and campers spending more then three (3) nights in one place must obtain a permit. Contact the DEC Forest Ranger office at 518-897-1303 for a free permit.
After Columbus Day, campers will once again be able to camp for free on the designated campsites on Middle and Lower Saranac Lake. Permits will still be required for larger groups and longer stays, as described above.
