ELECTRICIANS RECRUIT APPRENTICES

ORCHARD PARK, NY (09/29/2008; 0800)(readMedia)-- The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee, Local 41, will conduct recruitment from October 1, 2008 through September 30, 2009 for ten electrician apprentices, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today.

Applications can be obtained at the local, S. 3546 California Road, Orchard Park, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., every Wednesday during the recruitment period.

The committee requires that applicants:

  • Complete an application form stating they are physically able to do the work, have reliable transportation to work sites and related instruction classes, and are able to read, hear and understand instructions and warnings.
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Take the NJATC apprentice selection battery test and obtain a score of five or higher.*
  • Have a high school or general equivalency diploma or an associate's degree, with a passing grade in high school algebra or a post-high school algebra course* -- transcript or GED records required after acceptance for the program.
  • *OR have a minimum of four thousand hours of substantiated electrical construction experience.
  • Have a valid driver's license.
  • If a veteran, present a copy of their DD-214 for veteran's credit.
  • Pass a drug test - after acceptance for the program.
  • Live within the local's geographic jurisdiction (proof required) - all of Erie County; parts of Cattaraugus, Genesee and Wyoming counties.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
