Electricians Recruit Apprentices

ALBANY, NY (10/17/2007; 1100)(readMedia)-- The Tri-City Electricians Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee, IBEW Local 236, will conduct recruitment from November 1, 2007 through October 6, 2008 for 30 apprentices, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today.

Applications can be obtained in person at the Tri-City JATC, 428 Old Niskayuna Road, Latham, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., on the first Thursday of each month. They are also available online at www.tricityjatc.org . There is a $25 testing fee, to be paid when testing is administered. The fees will be waived if the applicant can provide documentation showing financial hardship as defined by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services 2004 Poverty Guidelines.

The committee requires that applicants:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a high school or general equivalency diploma, with a passing grade in algebra.
  • Take the electrical trade's aptitude test and obtain a score of four or higher.
  • Be able to read and understand English and hear and understand verbal instructions and warnings given in English.
  • Live within the local's geographic jurisdiction -- Albany, Columbia, Essex, Fulton, Greene, Hamilton, Montgomery, Otsego (Decatur and Worchester Townships), Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie or Warren County.
  • Be willing and able to travel to and from various job sites within the local's jurisdiction and be willing and able to attend all related classroom training.
  • Be physically able to do the work, which includes working from ladders and scaffolds and in confined spaces.
  • Pass a drug test, at the sponsor's expense, after acceptance into the program.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
