Electricians Recruit Apprentices

GENEVA, NY (02/11/2008; 1151)(readMedia)-- The Geneva Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for the Electrical Industry, Local 840, will conduct recruitment from February 13, 2008 through January 14, 2009 for 10 electrician apprentices, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today.

Applications can be obtained in person at the local, 1401 Routes 5 and 20, Geneva, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., on the second Wednesday of each month during the recruitment period

The committee requires that applicants:

• Be at least 18 years old.
• Have a high school or general equivalency diploma with one credit of high school algebra, or a passing grade in post high school algebra.
• Take the electrical trade’s aptitude test and obtain a score of four or higher. There is a $10 testing fee.
• Be able to read and understand English and hear and understand instructions and warnings given in English.
• Be able to get to and from job sites and be willing and able to attend all related classroom training.
• Have a NYS driver’s license – apprentices may be required to drive company vehicles.
• Live within the local’s geographic jurisdiction -- all of Yates County; Canandaigua, Farmington, Geneva, Gorham, Hopewell, Manchester, Phelps and Seneca in Ontario County; all townships except Covert and Lodi in Seneca County; Arcadia, Galen, Lyons and Savannah in Wayne County; all townships except Genoa, Ira, Locke, Sempronius, Sterling, Summerhill and Victory, in Cayuga County; Elbridge and Skaneateles in Onondaga County.
• Be physically able to do the work, which is determined by a physical exam, and includes working from ladders and scaffolds and in confined spaces.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
