Electricians Recruit Apprentices

ELMIRA, NY (09/12/2007; 1549)(readMedia)-- The Electricians Joint Apprenticeship Committee of Elmira, Local 139, will conduct recruitment from September 28, 2007 through February 22, 2008 for six apprentices, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today.

Applications can be obtained at the local, 508 College Ave., Elmira, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the fourth Friday of each month during the recruitment period.

The committee requires that applicants:

  • Be at least 17 years old to obtain an application – 18 prior to beginning the apprenticeship.
  • Have a high school or general equivalency diploma or an associate's degree, with a passing grade in high school algebra or a post-high school algebra course -- transcript or GED records required after acceptance for the program.
  • Have a valid driver's license – proof required after selection.
  • Take an aptitude test.
  • Have lived within the local's geographic jurisdiction for at least six months -- all of Chemung and Steuben Counties; parts of Allegany, Schuyler and Tioga Counties.
  • Take a physical examination and a drug test at the sponsor's expense -- if accepted for the program.

Veterans who wish to receive credit for military training and experience must submit a DD-214 after selection for the program.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
