Elevator Constructors Recruit Apprentices

ROCHESTER, NY (07/30/2008; 0800)(readMedia)-- The International Union of Elevator Constructors Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee, Local 27, will conduct recruitment on August 12, 2008 through July 14, 2009 for 5 elevator/escalator constructor and modernizer apprentices, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today.

Applications will be available in person only at the local, 244 Paul Road, Rochester, on Tuesday, August 12, from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, August 13, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and then every second Tuesday from September 9, 2008 to July 14, 2009 from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The committee requires that applicants:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a high school or equivalency diploma - proof required after acceptance for the program.
  • Score a minimum of 70 on the elevator industry aptitude test; pay a $10 testing fee.
  • Live within the local's geographic jurisdiction - Chemung, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Wayne and Yates Counties.
  • Be physically able to do the work, which includes lifting, climbing and working at heights.
  • Take a physical examination and a drug test at the contractor's expense -- after acceptance for the program.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
