BUFFALO, NY (09/05/2008; 0800)(readMedia)-- The International Union of Elevator Constructors Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee, Local 14, will conduct recruitment on September 10, 2008 through August 13, 2009 for six elevator/escalator constructor and modernizer apprentices, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today.
Applications can be obtained at the local, 3527 Harlem Road, Suite 9, Buffalo, on September 10 from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., and September 11 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Thereafter, applications will be accepted from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., on the second Thursday of each month during the recruitment period.
The committee requires that applicants:
• Be at least 18 years old.
• Have a high school or equivalency diploma.
• Have a valid driver's license -- apprentices will be required to drive company vehicles - proof required after acceptance for the program.
• Score a minimum of 70 on the elevator industry aptitude test; pay a $10 testing fee.
• Live within the local's geographic jurisdiction - Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans or Wyoming counties.
• Be physically able to do the work, which includes lifting, climbing and working at heights.
• Take a physical examination and a drug test at the contractor's expense - after acceptance for the program.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
