Elevator Constructors Recruit Apprentices

ALBANY, NY (02/14/2008; 0954)(readMedia)-- The International Union of Elevator Constructors Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee, Local 35, will conduct recruitment from February 19 through February 21, 2008 for 10 elevator/escalator constructor and modernizer apprentices, the State Labor Department announced today.

Applications will be available in person only at the local, 890 Third St., Albany, on Tuesday, February 19 through Thursday, February 21, from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The committee requires that applicants:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a high school or equivalency diploma – proof required after acceptance for the program.
  • Score a minimum of 70 on the elevator industry aptitude test; pay a $25 testing fee.
  • Live within the local’s geographic jurisdiction – ALBANY, CLINTON, COLUMBIA (Towns of Claverack, Hillsdale, Ghent, Stockport, Austerlitz, Canaan, New Lebanon, Chatham, Kinderhook, Stuyvesant and Greenport) ESSEX, FRANKLIN, FULTON, GREENE (Towns of Durham, Greenville, New Baltimore, Coxsackie, Cairo, Athens, and Catskill within a thirty mile radius of Albany) HAMILTON, HERKIMER, MADISON (Excluding the Towns of Lenox, Sullivan, Chittenango, Fenner, Cazenovia, Nelson, Eaton, DeRuyter, Georgetown and Lebanon), MONTGOMERY, ONEIDA (Excluding the Towns of Camden, Florence, and Vienna) OTSEGO, RENSSELAER, SARATOGA, SCHENECTADY, SCHOHARIE, WARREN, WASHINGTON
  • Be physically able to do the work, which includes lifting, climbing and working at heights.
  • Take a physical examination and a drug test at the contractor’s expense -- after acceptance for the program.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
