Empire State Highway Contractors Association Recruits Apprentices

FRANKFORT, NY (10/01/2007; 1133)(readMedia)-- The Empire State Highway Contractors Association, Inc. will conduct apprentice recruitment from October 3, 2007 through October 1, 2008 for four operating engineers (grading and paving equipment), three carpenters (heavy/highway), and three skilled construction craft laborers, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today.

Applications can be obtained at the association, 2481 Higby Road, Frankfort, from 8:30 a.m. to noon, the first Wednesday of each month during the recruitment period.

The association requires that applicants:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a high school or general equivalency diploma.
  • Have six months of trade-related experience.
  • Have a valid NYS driver's license -- apprentices will be required to operate company vehicles.
  • Have reliable transportation to and from work sites and classes of related instruction.
  • Be physically able to do the work, which may include lifting and carrying materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • If accepted for the program, take a physical examination and drug and alcohol testing, at the sponsor's expense.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
