PLATTSBURGH, NY (07/21/2008; 1342)(readMedia)-- Dr. Tracie Church Guzzio, a former resident of Las Vegas, was among the six SUNY Plattsburgh faculty members to have been honored with a State University of New York Chancellor's Award.
Guzzio, an associate professor of English, received the Excellence in Teaching Award, given to State University of New York faculty members who have consistently demonstrated superb skill in teaching.
Guzzio has taught courses covering topics like multiethnic American literature, African American literature, the African American novel and human rights literature - many of which she herself helped to develop. Students who have attended these courses consistently give Guzzio's teaching a high rating. They cite her enthusiasm, availability and respect for students.
"Former students who have become teachers write that they attempt to apply in their classrooms and relationships with their students what they learned about teaching from her," said Ettling.
Guzzio has also co-taught interdisciplinary classes with fellow members of the faculty, who also cite her for her openness and ability to inspire. In addition, they have commented on her use of teaching strategies to provide students with a rigorous learning experience, as well as her ability to provide students with constructive feedback.
Guzzio has a book manuscript under consideration and has had more than a dozen articles published in edited volumes. She has received a Dr. Nuala McGann Drescher Award and a fellowship at Plattsburgh's Institute for Ethics in Public Life.
