Statement of Support from Jay DiLorenzo, President, Preservation League of NYS
ALBANY, NY (01/09/2008; 1458)(readMedia)-- We are delighted to learn of the Governor’s commitment of $100 million for the stewardship of New York’s State Parks and Historic Sites. This investment will greatly aid a system that is nationally recognized for its size, stature, and diversity.
While the State Park System’s role in providing recreational opportunities and protecting open space is widely recognized, the system also boasts thirty-five State Historic Sites, ranging from Olana on the Hudson River to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Darwin Martin House complex in Buffalo, and from the Gothic Revival style Hoyt House in Dutchess County to the Robert Moses-conceived Jones Beach State Park in Nassau County.
From planning and maintenance to restoration and adaptive reuse, the capital needs of our State Park System have been deferred for too long.
The Preservation League commends Governor Spitzer and Commissioner Carol Ash for their visionary efforts to protect our unique natural, cultural and historic assets. We must continue to celebrate our parks and historic sites for the important role they play in New York’s quality of life, an essential element in sustainable economic development.
