Green Groups Applaud NYS Assembly Resolution to Protect Great Lakes & Call on IJC to Ditch Water Plan

Assembly to Introduce Resolution Calling on the International Joint Commission to Protect Lake Ontario & St. Lawrence River

ALBANY, NY (05/02/2008; 1418)(readMedia)-- WHAT: Environmental groups from across the state including Audubon New York, Citizens Campaign for the Environment, Environmental Advocates of New York, Great Lakes United, Save the River, and Sierra Club – Atlantic Chapter, will meet in the State Capital on Great Lakes Information Day to applaud the New York State Assembly for introducing a resolution that calls on the IJC to develop a more protective Water Level Management Plan for Lake Ontario and St. Lawrence River.

WHO: Members of the New York State Assembly (TBA) will be joined by Jennifer Caddick, Executive Director of Save the River; Sean Mahar, Director of Government Relations & Communications for Audubon New York; Katherine Nadeau, Water & Natural Resources Program Associate with Environmental Advocates of New York; and Jennifer Nalbone; Director, Navigation and Invasive Species for Great Lakes United, as well as representatives of other environmental groups.

WHERE/ WHEN: 12 p.m. on Monday, May 5, 2008, LCA Press Room, Albany, NY (The LCA Press Room has temporarily moved to The Egg.)

WHY: The Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River ecosystems have suffered consistent losses to their globally significant biodiversity due to unnatural and damaging water levels regulation. Rather than protect these ecosystems, the IJC’s recently released "Plan 2007" does nothing to end decades of documented environmental degradation along Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River.
