Insulators and Asbestos Workers Recruit Apprentices

ALBANY, NY (01/17/2008; 1002)(readMedia)-- The International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and Asbestos Workers, Local 40, will conduct recruitment from February 4, 2008 through February 2, 2009 for six apprentices, the State Labor Department announced today.

Applications can be obtained at the union, 890 Third St., Albany, from 8 a.m. to noon, every Monday, excluding holidays, during the recruitment period.

The union requires that applicants:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have at least a tenth grade education, with a passing grade in math I.
  • Have lived within the local's geographic jurisdiction for at least one year prior to the application date – Albany, Clinton, Columbia, Delaware, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Greene, Hamilton, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Sullivan, Ulster, Warren and Washington Counties.
  • Sign a statement attesting to their physical ability to do the work, which includes working at heights on scaffolding or ladders, indoors or outdoors.
  • Sign a consent form agreeing to random drug testing -- if selected for the program.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
