Iowa Game Celebrated In Game Warden’s Cooking State Fair Contest

DES MOINES, IA (09/11/2008; 1352)(readMedia)-- The Savory Quail Bites created by Philip Doud of Clive won First Place Overall in the Game Warden's Cook Off judged August 16, at the 2008 Iowa State Fair.

Contestants were asked to create an award-winning dish made with fish or game and nuts, berries, vegetables or mushrooms all native to Iowa.

In the Meats category, Doud claimed first place. Shelby McCreedy of Atlantic won second place for BBQ Venison Meatballs and Ilene Wallace of Council Bluffs earned third place with Iowa Deer and Wild Rice Casserole.

Anita Van Gundy of Des Moines won first place in the Nature's Harvest category for her Black Walnut Sweet Rolls. Shelby McCreedy claimed second place with Gooseberry-Rhubarb Pie and Ilene Wallace won third place with Iowa Pie.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny.
