Iron Workers Recruit Apprentices

UTICA, NY (10/01/2007; 1127)(readMedia)-- The International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers Joint Apprenticeship Committee, Local 440, District I and II, will conduct recruitment from September 24, 2007 through September 26, 2008, for five iron worker (outside) apprentices, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today.

Applications can be obtained at the local, 801 Varick St., 2nd Floor, Utica, and Akwesasne Sub Hall, 1372 State Rt. 37, Akwesasne from 8:30 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday during the recruitment period.

The committee requires that applicants:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a high school or equivalency diploma.
  • Have reliable transportation to and from work sites and apprentice classes.
  • Live within the geographic jurisdiction of the locals -- all of Oneida, Herkimer, Otsego, St. Lawrence, Franklin and Lewis Counties, and parts of Madison, Hamilton, Fulton, Jefferson and Montgomery Counties.
  • Be physically able to do the work -- which includes lifting up to 100 pounds and working at heights in excess of 100 feet.
  • Take a physical examination and drug test -- after acceptance for the program.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
