Ironworkers Recruit Apprentices

ALBANY, NY (04/16/2008; 1517)(readMedia)-- The Joint Apprenticeship Committee for the Ironworkers of Albany and Vicinity, Local 12, will conduct recruitment from May 2, 2008 through April 3, 2009 for four ironworker (outside) apprentices, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today.

Applications can be obtained at the local, 890 Third St., 1st Floor, Albany, from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., the first Friday of each month during the recruitment period. Applications must be completed in person, on the premises, by 10 a.m.

The committee requires that applicants:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a high school or general equivalency diploma.
  • Have transportation to various job sites and classes of related instruction.
  • Live within the local's geographic jurisdiction – all of Columbia, Greene, Albany, Schenectady, Rensselaer, Schoharie, Saratoga, Washington, Warren, Essex, Clinton and Delaware Counties; and parts of Montgomery, Fulton, Hamilton and Otsego Counties in New York State; also the Berkshires in Massachusetts and Bennington, Vermont.
  • Be physically able to do the work -- statement required.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
