Jan Worthan Named Iowan of the Day

STORM LAKE, IA (07/31/2008; 1023)(readMedia)-- The Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation and Cookies Food Products are honored to name Jan Worthan as an Iowan of the Day for the 2008 Iowa State Fair.

Jan has been a vital member of the Buena Vista County community for numerous years. After Jan's son, Ryan, was sent to Afghanistan in 2001, she founded the Storm Lake Military Families Support Group. This organization has helped meet the needs of over thirty families whose loved ones have been deployed overseas to Iraq and Afghanistan. She has also donated her time and effort to Operation Support Our Troops. Jan served the community through everything from prom committees to booster clubs to 4-H clubs. In 2005 she led the effort to make preparations for the visiting Carson and Barnes Circus. This event raised over $4,500 for the Storm Lake Chamber of Commerce. Jan has also been involved in the Watanye Service Club, as well as Kiwanis, and was the first female president of the Truesdale Farmer's Club.

Jan's day of honor at the Iowa State Fair will be Tuesday, August 12. Jan will receive a night's stay at the Des Moines Downtown Marriott, VIP Parking at the Fair, special use of the Iowan of the Day golf cart, $200 in cash, tickets to the Charlie Daniels Band concert at the Grandstand, and subscriptions to Iowan and Iowa Gardening magazines. Jan will be part of a special presentation on the Anne & Bill Riley Stage at 2:15 p.m. on August 12.

The Blue Ribbon Foundation began the Iowan of the Day award in 1997 to honor those Iowans who've truly made a difference for those around them. The Foundation reviews over 250 nominations each year, and selects those that show examples of integrity, decency, hard work, and dedication to community improvement.

The Blue Ribbon Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. Since its inception in 1993, the Foundation has generated over $65 million for renovations and improvements to the Iowa State Fairgrounds.
