THE WOMEN'S CITY CLUB OF NEW YORK PRESENTS:

PUBLIC ADVOCATE BETSY GOTBAUM

33 West 60th Street, 5th Floor Conference Room, New York, NY 10023

Advance registration required; please call 212-353-8070 ext. 204. Free to WCC Members and Press with ID; $15 for non-members.

BETSY GOTBAUM, the NYC Public Advocate, reviews complaints about City services, assesses agency responsiveness to the public and recommends improvements in programs and procedures.

Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum will meet with the Women's City Club and discuss her recent reports on the quality of arts education and physical education in the New York City public schools and other aspects of public life. A trained and experienced teacher herself, she has focused on education policy, as well as housing and development, child welfare, seniors, health and human services, women and families, and transportation. She issued a report in June on how NYC's Department of Education fails to meet State regulations for arts instruction. Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum will take questions after her talk.

Over the past three decades, Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum has had a distinguished career in the public and private sectors. She has worked as advisor to three mayors: financial executive developing capital for start-up entrepreneurial firms; Executive Director of The New York City Police Foundation; Commissioner of the Department of Parks & Recreation; and President of the New-York Historical Society. Ms. Gotbaum has been known for using nontraditional methods to turn troubled institutions into success stories. Since first elected in 2001, Ms. Gotbaum has worked for seven years as New York City's Public Advocate. With a long-standing love of helping New Yorkers, Ms. Gotbaum is committed to consistently fighting for some of New York's most underserved populations. Since her reelection in 2005, her administration has helped to increase access to health care, strengthened child and senior welfare services, supported affordable housing, and helped reform education.

Founded in 1915, the Women's City Club of New York is an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit advocate working to make New York City a better place by shaping public policy and encouraging citizen involvement in government.
