Laborers Recruit Apprentices

BINGHAMTON, NY (04/02/2008; 1444)(readMedia)-- The Joint Apprenticeship Committee for the Laborers’ International Union of North America, Local 7, will conduct recruitment from April 4, 2008 through March 6, 2009 for four skilled construction craft laborer apprentices, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today.

Applications can be obtained in person only at the local, 98 Main St., Binghamton, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., the first working Friday of each month during the recruitment period. Completed applications must be returned in person.

The committee requires that applicants:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a high school or general equivalency diploma or five years of trade-related experience.
  • Have reliable transportation to and from work sites and related instruction classes.
  • Have a valid driver's license – apprentices will be required to drive sponsor’s vehicles.
  • Sign an affidavit stating they are physically able to do the work.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
